Firefighters working to put out flames at Wyoming Public Schools bus garage

Two employees were inside the bus maintenance garage at the time when the fire sparked. They made it out, but did have minor smoke inhalation, officials said.

WYOMING, Mich. — Crews are working to put out flames that erupted at a bus garage for Wyoming Public Schools Wednesday morning.

The fire began around 10 a.m. Wednesday at the garage at 2181 Prairie Pkwy SW in Wyoming. This is near 28th Street between Byron Center Avenue SW and Burlingame Avenue.

Video showed heavy flames and smoke pouring from the garage, and a large presence of firefighters.

Brad Dornbos, Fire Inspector/Fire Investigator for Wyoming Fire Department, said two buses caught fire in the maintenance garage.

Two district employees were inside the garage at the time and made it out.

They both had minor smoke inhalation and were treated at the scene.

Dornbos said the Grandville Fire Department was called in to help Wyoming firefighters.

Fire crews expect to be putting out hot spots and working for hours to determine what started the blaze.

Smoke could be seen for miles.

The Wyoming Public School superintendent told 13 ON YOUR SIDE that after-school activities and bus drop-off will not be impacted.

"Thanks to the swift response of the Wyoming Police and Fire Departments, the situation is currently under control. We are incredibly grateful for their efforts and dedication in keeping our community safe," Superintendent Craig Hoekstra said.

Robert Womack, who recently won re-election to his old Kent County 17th District seat, was at the scene of the fire and shared video of crews battling the flames.
