KENT COUNTY, Mich. — A Kent County man who wasn't originally planning to buy a Luxury Cashword ticket is now $500,000 richer thanks to a store employee who picked out his ticket.

The 55-year-old man, who chose to remain anonymous, won $500,000 playing the Luxury Cashword instant game. He bought his ticket at the Kent Mini Mart in Kent City.

The player said he buys instant tickets once or twice a month, but usually doesn't play the Cashword games. He decided to buy a $10 ticket on a whim while at the store and the clerk handed him his winning ticket.

“I scratched the ticket when I got home and after revealing a few words I thought: ‘This is going to be a good ticket!’ When I got done scratching, I thought I’d won maybe $1,000, but I wasn’t sure," he said. "I took it to the store and got a message to file a claim, so I decided to take it to my uncle’s house and have him look it over because he plays Cashword tickets all the time. After my uncle looked it over, he said: ‘You won big!’ I was pretty shocked to find out it was a $500,000 winner!”

The player recently visited Michigan Lottery headquarters to claim his winnings. He said he plans to buy a house and a new truck with the money.

Luxury Cashword costs $10 per ticket and players have a chance to win prizes ranging from $10 to $500,000. The game was launched in March 2023.
