KENT COUNTY, Mich. — A Kent County man is still in shock after winning half of a Fantasy 5 jackpot from the Michigan Lottery.

The 40-year-old player, who chose to remain anonymous, bought his winning ticket on Oct. 6 at the Kum & Go in Wyoming.

The player said he nearly missed that he had bought the winning ticket when he accidentally scanned an older ticket.

“I play Fantasy 5 regularly and check my tickets the morning after the drawing on the Michigan Lottery app,” said the player. “I scanned my ticket using the ticket scanner in the app and got a ‘Not a Winner’ message. I looked to see where the winning tickets were sold and saw one of them was sold at the store I buy my tickets from.

“I looked at the ticket again and realized I had scanned one from a few days ago, not the ticket for the drawing the night before. I scanned the correct ticket and started shaking when the prize amount of $313,197 came up on the screen. It was so exciting!”

The player recently visited Michigan Lottery headquarters to claim his prize. With his winnings, he plans to pay bills, help family and save the rest.

Fantasy 5 costs $1 to play. For an extra cost, additional chances to win can be added to each ticket. Players select five numbers from zero to 39 and try to match the drawing.
