MARCELLUS, Mich. — A Cass County man is preparing for retirement after winning a $1 million Powerball prize from the Michigan Lottery.

55-year-old Tori Simpson, of Marcellus, bought his winning ticket online and matched the five white balls—12-23-44-57-61—to take home the prize during the March 16 drawing.

“I logged into the app before heading to work the morning after the drawing to see if maybe I won the jackpot and didn’t have to work anymore,” joked Simpson. “It may not have been the jackpot, but it was quite shocking when I logged into my account and saw $1 million pending. Needless to say, I didn’t end up going into work that day!”

Lottery Commissioner Suzanna Shkreli congratulated Simpson on his win and said playing the lottery can impact Michigan residents in positive ways.

"These huge Powerball jackpots are exciting for players and great for Michigan schools, which received a fifth consecutive contribution of more than $1 billion from the Lottery in fiscal year 2023,” said Shkreli.

For Simpson, who recently visited lottery headquarters to claim his winnings, taking home the money will make a big difference in his family's life.

“Winning a $1 million prize means living comfortably and having a nice financial cushion for me and my family,” said Simpson.

With the winnings, he plans to build a new home and save for retirement.
