OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich. — An Ottawa County couple is proving that third time's the charm after winning $500,000 with their third instant lottery ticket.
The winning Holiday Wishes instant game ticket was bought at the Marathon gas station in Spring Lake by a 73-year-old man, who chose to remain anonymous.
The man said he and his wife have been playing draw games since the Michigan Lottery began. The inspiration to begin playing instant games started when they were watching "My Lottery Dream Home" and saw the winners got their prizes from instant games.
“This Holiday Wishes ticket was the third scratch off ticket we’d ever bought, and when we purchased it, the cashier joked: ‘Remember me when you win big!’" the player said.
“We both have bad eyesight, so when my wife scratched it off, she thought we won $5. I looked it over and thought we won $500. My wife looked it over again, and that’s when she noticed it was really a $500,000 winner!" he said. "We called our son, and the first thing he said was: ‘This is a huge, life-changing event!’ Winning truly is going to be life-changing for us.”
With their winnings, the couple plans to pay bills, donate to charity and take a trip to Paris.
Holiday Wishes launched in October 2023. Tickets cost $10 each and prizes range from $10 to $500,000.
