MUSKEGON COUNTY, Mich. — The calendar may say January 2021 but the 2020 fall MHSAA football playoffs are not yet over.
On Saturday, Jan. 9, four Muskegon County teams will play in the regional finals games. The four teams preparing for the games are Muskegon, Mona Shores, Oakridge, and Montague.
In Montague, school staff and community volunteers spent Friday clearing snow from the field and ice from the team's home stands.
"It's been a nice January so far," said Montague coach Pat Collins.
The teams participating in the MHSAA playoffs were informed exciting news Wednesday that 250 fans could attend the games, 125 for the home team and the same number for the away team. Each Montague player received 4 tickets to distribute to immediate family members.
"That's what we're going to stick with right now until we're told more people can come in," Collins said.
Montague will host Montrose, Mona Shores is at East Lansing, Oakridge is at Grand Rapids Catholic Central, and Muskegon will host East Grand Rapids.
"Fortunately, for our kids and our seniors get to finish what they started," said Muskegon Athletic Director Keith Guy.
Guy tells 13 ON YOUR SIDE that players had to pass three COVID-19 tests over the last seven days in order to play in Saturday's game.
"It's a little bit more intense," said Guy. "But a safer way to get our kids back on the field."
With a cap on fan attendance, each of the Muskegon County schools has arranged radio broadcasts and video streaming services.
Information on the broadcasts and streaming video is available on the schools' website, athletic page, or at www.MHSAA.com.
"It's nice to see all the Muskegon County teams still rolling along, we had to wait but it's special to have us in there," said Collins.
Saturday's forecast for the Muskegon area includes partly sunny skies and a high temperature around 37 degrees.
