NEWBERRY, Mich. (WZZM)—A Michigan corrections officer could spend the rest of his life in prison, after investigators say he tried to hire a hit man.

Jason Lee Bufford, 37, is charged with solicitation of murder. He works at the Newberry Correctional Facility in the Upper Peninsula.

The investigation into the plot began at the prison two months ago. A prison inspector notified the state department of corrections of Bufford's alleged intentions. Investigators have not released much information about the allegations, but say the murder-for-hire plot did not involve an inmate.

Bufford was suspended from the prison without pay. He is in jail on a $500,000 bond. Prosecutors say in order to get a conviction, they have to prove Bufford made an actual agreement with someone to commit the murder.
