Michigan man dies in powered parachute crash

Witnesses told police that the small aircraft was flying low when the parachute collapsed.

NEW ERA, Mich. — A 63-year-old Rothbury resident died in a powered parachute crash on Saturday in Oceana County. 

The Oceana County Sheriff's Office said that 911 calls about the crash started around 10:42 a.m. The reports indicated that a powered parachute fell out of the sky and crash-landed on S. 56th Avenue north of W. Stony Lake Road. 

Witnesses told police that the small aircraft was flying low when the parachute collapsed.

Several departments responded to the scene. 

Responding agencies found the pilot, Terrance Dykstra, and he was transported to Mercy Health in Muskegon where he later died from injuries sustained from the incident. 

There was no one else involved or injured. 

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were contacted by the Sheriff's Office and they will both continue the investigation.
