JERUSALEM, Israel — Former Michigan representative Justin Amash shared to the social media platform X Friday afternoon that several of his relatives were killed in Gaza.

Amash said his relatives were sheltering at Saint Porphyrius Orthodox Church in Gaza when there was an Israeli airstrike.

"Give rest, O Lord, to their souls, and may their memories be eternal," read the post.

The strike destroyed part of the complex and killed several of his relatives as he said in his post.

"The Palestinian Christian community has endured so much. Our family is hurting badly. May God watch over all Christians in Gaza—and all Israelis and Palestinians who are suffering, whatever their religion or creed," said Amash.

Amash served as the U.S. representative for Michigan's 3rd congressional district from 2011 to 2021. He was the first Palestinian-American member of congress.
