EAST LANSING, Mich. — The Islamic community in East Lansing is mourning the loss of a former international scholar who attended Michigan State Univeristy.
Traiq Thabet and his familied died in their home from an apparent bombing in Gaza amid the conflict, The Islamic Center of East Lansing, Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin (D-MI 7th District) and friends shared.
Thabet was a visiting Humphrey Fellow at Michigan State University in 2021-2022. The Humphrey Fellowship program is a Fulbright exchange that connects the US with foreign leaders to tackle are upmost pressing global challenges.
Michigan State University is one of a few host universities across the country for these fellows.
Thabet attended prayers at the East Lansing Islamic Center.
"...{He} was a beloved brother to many of us," the center shared on Facebook.
Congresswoman Slotkin shared her condolences with the Imam at the Islamic Center in East Lansing.
"It is clear that what's going on in the Middle East is affecting Michiganders personally. The amount of emotion and pain that is going on in the metro Detroit area and beyond is real. And every single day people in Michigan are hearing about friends and loved ones who are in harm's way," Congresswoman Slotkin said
