One person killed in double shooting in Mason County

The area of US-31 between Hoague and Koening roads was closed while authorities investigated the scene and made an arrest.

FREE SOIL TOWNSHIP, Mich. -  One person was killed and another was injured in a shooting in Free Soil Township Tuesday morning.

The shooting took place at a residence in the 10000 block of North US-31. Four deputies from the Mason County Sheriff's Office responded and SWAT was activated, along with assistance from Michigan State Police and Manistee County Sheriff's Office.

The caller -- who was also one of the shooting victims -- told law enforcement the name of the shooter, his location in the house and that there were small children inside the home.

Law enforcement established a perimeter around the house and evacuated one wounded adult and two children. The wounded adult said the shooter was barricaded in a room.

Just before 8:30 a.m., an adult male surrendered to officers and was taken into custody without incident.

When conducting a check of the residence, deputies and MSP troopers found an adult male who was killed by an apparent gunshot wound.

The victim who survived was transported to Munson Hospital in Manistee and is currently being treated for serious but non-life threatening injuries.
