UPDATE: Ruben Gomez-Vazques, 38-year-old from Grand Rapids, was pronounced dead at the scene. Rafael Hernandez-Alvarez, 41-year-old male from Grand Rapids, was injured, treated at Holland Community Hospital and has now released.
Earlier: One man is dead and another seriously hurt after a partial collapse at the Holland Civic Center. It happened Tuesday, Aug. 1, on the east end of the building.
Captain Keith Mulder with the Holland Department of Public Safety said a full investigation is underway to figure out what went wrong.
"Firefighters were able to remove the subject from the collapse location, however that subject was pronounced deceased at the scene, the second subject was transported to Holland hospital for serious injuries," he said.
The Civic Center is currently undergoing major renovations that include demolition work. GDK OAK Construction is the lead contractor on the project but we're told the two victims were employed by a sub-contractor.
Construction on the Civic Center has been put on hold until officials find out what went wrong. The new building was scheduled to be complete in the fall of 2018, no word if that date will be moved.
