GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Around 200 absentee ballots on the Northwest side of Grand Rapids are considered spoiled after going missing in the mail.

Absentee ballots were sent out on Sept. 26. Not long after that, City Clerk Joel Hondorp said his office started getting calls from voters who had not received the ballots.

Now his office is working with their mail vendor and the US Postal Service to find out what happened.

Hondorp said his office does not believe there was any wrongdoing, and that he is not worried about someone finding the ballots to use them to vote.

"We match every signature when it comes in. And now that we've spoiled the ones with the first batch that went out, we're issuing new ones. It'll say that we can't receive this ballot because it's been spoiled," Hondorp said.

Hondorp said if his office does happen to get two ballots back, they will reach out to the voter to rectify the issue.
