USA, — Donald Trump acquired all the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency, according to the Associated Press. Vice President Kamala Harris has officially lost the 2024 race.
Trump's win is a historic one. At 78, he is the oldest president ever elected. He will also be the first defeated president in 132 years to win another term in the White House, and the first person convicted of a felony to take over the Oval Office.
The race was contentious from the start. But the reason the former president will be back in the Oval Office and not Harris is thanks to wins in several battleground states.
Trump took an early lead as Republican-leaning areas finished counting votes, starting with Indiana and a slew of southern states. Harris then took several states in the northeast.
That's when things started going downhill for the Vice President. While Harris collected states with large electoral college numbers, like California and New York, Trump started taking over in those pivotal swing states.
Trump took North Carolina, Georgia and Pennsylvania, three of seven pivotal swing states, putting him just a few electoral votes short of a win.
Around 2:30 a.m., Trump gave his victory speech, saying "We're going to help our country heal."
Then he took a fourth swing state, Wisconsin, putting him over the 270 electoral votes he needed early Wednesday morning. That led the Associated Press to call the race.
The other three swing states—Arizona, Michigan and Nevada—have not yet been called.
