Officials: Battleground Michigan is on track for record-breaking voter turnout

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said 45.8% of registered active voters in Michigan have already voted.

DETROIT, Michigan — Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson gave an update on voter turnout from Detroit this morning, where she said the battleground state is on track for record-breaking voter turnout.

She said before the polls opened on Election Day, 3.3 million Michiganders had already voted. Benson said 1.2 million citizens voted through early in-person voting and 2.1 citizens voted through absentee ballots.

"It really emphasized how excited people were and are to have their voices heard in this election and meet this moment," Benson said.

She said 234,000 absentee ballots have yet to be returned, and encouraged those voters to fill them out and bring them to a local drop box or return them to their local clerk by 8 p.m. Tuesday.

As of this morning, Benson said 45.8% of registered active voters in Michigan had already voted.

"Whether people choose to vote in person here at precincts or return their ballot at a local drop box, it's going to be a celebratory day, a hopeful day, and a day where we can be proud that so many people are participating in our election already," she said.

According to Benson, on Monday night the City of Detroit reported they've already been able to process 95% of ballots citizens turned in through the mail or local drop boxes.

She said unofficial results for the election will begin to be reported shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday.

"Patience still is the name of the game for this day, and as the night unfolds, because no matter who the voters choose, we will follow the law, and we will ensure that the will of the people is protected," Benson said.
