MICHIGAN, USA — Michiganders headed to the polls on Tuesday, Aug. 6 to vote in either the Democratic or Republican primary election.

In the Democratic primary, two congressional candidates for Michigan's 3rd District wanted to represent their party on the ballot in November's general election.

Hillary Scholten was seeking reelection. Salim Al-Shatel, a real estate agent who has experience in the automotive industry and owns his own business, challenged Scholten.

Scholten won by a landslide, with the race being called by the Associated Press around 10 p.m. with Scholten holding about 85% of the votes.

Michigan's 3rd Congressional District is comprised of Kent, Muskegon and Ottawa counties, and includes the cities of Grand Rapids, Muskegon and Grand Haven.

Scholten will face off against their Republican opponent, as well as any other third-party challengers.
