MUSKEGON COUNTY, Mich. — While Muskegon County has been a Democratic stronghold, trends in previous presidential elections have shown that the county could be shifting.
And with Michiganders waking up to see that former President Donald Trump has won the election, some may be wondering how Muskegon County voted this year.
Going back to 2004, George W. Bush led John Kerry by nearly 9,000 votes in Muskegon County. And in 2008, Barack Obama led John McCain by nearly 24,000.
However, in 2012, Barack Obama’s lead over Mitt Romney dropped to only 14,000. In 2016, Hillary Clinton led Donald Trump by a little over a thousand.
This takes us to 2020, when the margin between President Biden and Donald Trump was just 510. During the 2020 presidential election, Biden received about 29,000 absentee votes, with Trump only receiving around 16,000 from the county’s voters.
Now, the county has flipped. A county-by-county breakdown of Michigan shows that Muskegon County voted for Trump by about a percentage point—49.9% to 48.6%.
