NORTON SHORES, Mich. — On Monday, Kim Fisher was sworn in as the Norton Shores Ward 1 City Councilwoman. This makes Fisher the first African-American, person of color elected to office in the City of Norton Shores.
"First African American woman to hold that seat, proud of it," said Fisher. "It means setting a precedent for people of color."
Fisher is also a foster mother and a community leader. She comes from a legacy of leadership, "Eugene Fisher was my father," said Fisher. "He was a politician, he was the (vice) mayor of Muskegon Heights, city council, UAW president. So I had it kind of like in my bloodstream."
Fisher has spent over ten years mentoring youth for the Muskegon Heights Cheer and Football program. She is also active as the treasurer for Heaven's Gate Church.
She received her bachelor's degree from Western Michigan University and worked as a public school educator for over thirty years before retiring.
Fisher has been a homeowner in Ward 1 of Norton Shores for 15 years, where she will serve as councilwoman.
“It is great to see how far we have come, and we are just getting started. Thank you Norton Shores, let’s make a difference. It is a pleasure to serve the community I love,” Fisher shared.
