LANSING, Mich. — Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced $4 million in funding to be used to help repair local roads across the state.

The grant money will be used to fund local road repair across the state, including $750,000 of grants to be used across two projects in Ionia and Ottawa counties.

In Ionia County, $375,000 from the state will be used alongside $108,600 from the City of Belding to resurface and improve Bridge Street from M-44 to Ellis Street.

The project will lay new asphalt, replace the curb and gutter, and paint new pavement markings. The state says the road condition is "rapidly declining and needs resurfacing to maintain unrestricted access."

In Ottawa County, $375,000 from the state will be used alongside $664,500 from the local road commission to resurface 8th Avenue and Hayes Street.

The project will repave both roads from Garfield Street to the Kent County Line, as well as widening the shoulders, painting new pavement markings and improving sidewalk ramps.

"These grants will help communities across Michigan fix local roads faster to get people to work, allow businesses to expand, and move goods all year round," said Governor Whitmer. "Since I took office, Michigan has fixed 20,000 lane miles of road and 1,400 bridges while supporting more than 100,000 jobs, and today’s funding will add to that total. Let's keep working together to fix the damn roads so people can go to work, drop their kids off at school, and run errands without blowing a tire or cracking an axle. Let's get this done to make a real difference in people's lives."

Another $3.25 million will be used alongside local funding to repair roads in several other counties across the sate.

The grant money is provided by the Transportation Economic Development Fund, which helps finance local transportation infrastructure.
