LANSING, Mich. — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer will sign legislation to add $125 million to the bipartisan education budget for this school year this week.

On Thursday in Lansing, Whitmer plans to sign the legislation to build upon her administration's work to invest in Michigan students and schools.

Whitmer will also sign two bills to implement proven "Science of Reading" strategies in public school curricula.

This year, Whitmer signed an education budget that included investments in funding for students, continued Michigan's free school meals program and funded raises for educators.

The budget also expanded the Michigan Guarantee initiative which works to provide free preschool through community college.

The signing of the legislation on Thursday follows Whitmer's signing of 17 bills into law on Tuesday.

The bills ranged from hospital funding to the unionizing of an often overlooked sector of the healthcare industry.
