LANSING, Mich — Michigan's minimum wage is set to increase twice in 2025 due to a recent Michigan Supreme Court ruling.
In July, the Michigan Supreme Court ruled to reinstate the Improved Workforce Opportunity Wage Act of 2018, which will increase Michigan's minimum wage over several years.
The ruling came after a legal battle over the law, which was the result of a 2018 petition drive that collected over 280,000 signatures. The Michigan Republican-led legislature chose to adopt the new law instead of putting it on the ballot but then watered the law down before passing it late in 2018.
In a ruling of 4-3, the Michigan Supreme Court ruled that the lawmakers violated the state constitution and reinstated the law to begin its increase of the minimum wage in 2025.
Tuesday, the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity released the timeline for the minimum wage rate increase in 2025 and beyond.
