WASHINGTON D.C., DC — Yet another Michigan politician is joining calls from many members of the Democratic party in asking President Joe Biden to step aside as the Democratic presidential nominee.
Lawmakers at both the state and national level are touting Biden's achievements, while at the same time, asking him to let a new candidate top the ticket this November.
The call for Biden to step down as the presidential candidate comes after a poor debate performance last month against former President Donald Trump. Since the debate, Biden has been trying to rehabilitate his campaign amidst calls from his own party to step aside.
U.S. Representative Hillary Scholten (D), who represents much of West Michigan and is running for reelection, took to X (formerly known as Twitter) Thursday morning and joined these calls for Biden to step aside.
"For the good of our democracy, I believe it is time for him to step aside from the presidential race and allow a new leader to step up," Scholten wrote in part on X. "With the challenges facing our country in 2025 and beyond, it is essential that we have the strongest possible candidate leading the top of the ticket—no just to win, but to govern."
Rep. Scholten is the first Congressional Democrat from Michigan to call for Biden to step down. However State Rep. Phil Skaggs (D) also called for Biden to exit the presidential race on Wednesday.
Scholten said that ultimately the choice to step down is only for the president to make.
"I will respect his decision if he chooses to remain in the race, and I will still vote for him, as a clear and necessary alternative to Donald Trump, who would sow chaos and destruction if he were to return to the Oval Office," Scholten wrote.
