Important dates ahead of Michigan's August primary election

Beginning Tuesday, July 23, citizens can only register to vote with their local clerk in-person with proof of residency.

LANSING, Mich. — Michigan's August primary election is just days away, and there are several important dates to be observed between now and Election Day.

Voter Registration

Anyone who still wants to register to vote, must now do it in-person.

Monday, July 22 was the deadline for online and mail-in voter registration. Now, you have until Election Day on Tuesday, Aug. 6 to register to vote with your local clerk.

To register to vote with your local clerk, you will need to provide proof of residency. You can find your local clerk here.

Early Voting

Early voting begins on Saturday, July 27 and lasts through Sunday, Aug. 4. You can find your early voting location here.

You must be registered to vote before voting at an early voting site. Early voting sites do not offer voter registration. However, some early voting sites are at a clerk's office or satellite office, which allow for in-person voter registration with proof of residency.

Absentee Voting

Registered voters can apply for an absentee ballot online, by mail or at a clerk's office, but the deadlines for each may be different.

Online request

You can request an absentee ballot online until 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 6, but the state recommends submitting the request at least 15 days before the election to ensure receiving and submitting the ballot before Election Day. Request an absentee ballot online here.

The requirements for an online absentee ballot request:

  • Full name
  • Michigan driver's license or ID number
  • Date of birth
  • Eye color
  • Last four digits of the voters Social Security number
  • Mailing address

Mail request

Applications for an absentee ballot by mail must be received by your local clerk's office by 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 6, but the state recommends you mail the request at least 15 days before the election to ensure receiving and submitting the ballot before Election Day.

You must use an absentee voter ballot application when requesting your ballot by mail. You can submit your completed application by mail, at an official drop box or at your local clerk's office. You can find the address for your local clerk here.

The requirements for an absentee ballot request by mail:

  • Full name
  • Year of birth
  • Address and mailing address
  • Signature of record (as provided on driver’s license or ID or on a previous voter registration application)

Clerk's Office request

You can request, complete and/or submit your absentee ballot at your local clerk's office. Registered voters have until 4 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 5 to submit an application in person at the clerk's office.

Unregistered voters who are eligible to vote in Michigan have until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 6 to register to vote or update their registration address and request an absentee ballot to complete and submit on site. You only need to be in line at your clerk's office by 8 p.m. on Aug. 6 to register to vote and cast an absentee ballot.
