Peter Meijer joins GOP primary for US Senate

Meijer joins a field of GOP candidates including former Detroit police chief James Craig and former U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers.

MICHIGAN, USA — Former Congressman Peter Meijer announced Monday morning that he plans to run for the United States Senate.

If elected, he would fill the open seat that will be left by longtime Senator Debbie Stabenow.

“We considered every aspect of the campaign, and are confident we have the best chance of taking back this seat for the Republicans and fighting hard for a conservative future,” Meijer said in the announcement.

Meijer served one term in Congress and was one of just 10 Republicans who voted to impeach former president Donald Trump following the Jan. 6 insurrection.

Meijer faced pushback for that decision, and later lost in the primary to eventual runner-up John Gibbs during the 2022 election cycle.

“We are in dark and uncertain times, but we have made it through worse. The challenges are great, but so is our country," Meijer said in a statement. "If we are to see another great American century, we need leaders who aren’t afraid to be bold, will do the work, and can’t be bought.”

Meijer joins a field of GOP candidates including former Detroit police chief James Craig and former U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers. This comes after Stabenow announced in January that she would not be seeking re-election in 2024.

"I'll continue to focus on my message of authentic leadership, public safety, and economic opportunity, combined with my proven track record of success throughout my 44-year law enforcement career." said Craig after Meijer announced his plans to run. "Michiganders—and Americans—are sick and tired of sending the same people back to Washington time and time again as nothing changes for the better. I've spent my life protecting and defending the American people, and I'm not finished yet."
