LANSING, Mich. — Republicans in the Michigan House of Representatives caucused Thursday to select new leadership for the 2024-25 term after they gained control of the House following the election.
State Rep. Matt Hall R-Richland Township will serve as the next speaker of the House, beginning with the transition to the 103rd Legislature in January 2025.
Hall was selected through the House Republicans’ incoming majority caucus on Thursday, where legislators also selected a floor leader, speaker pro tempore and other leadership positions.
“The people of Michigan elected a new House Republican majority to put our state back on the road to success,” Hall said. “Our focus will be on serving the people of our great state. Michiganders want safe neighborhoods, high-paying careers, effective schools, and secure elections. House Republicans are ready to get to work to make our state the best place to raise a family safely and affordably.”
Hall was first elected in 2018 and has been serving since 2019. He represents the 42nd House District, which includes portions of Kalamazoo and Allegan counties.
House Republicans also selected the following legislators to serve on Speaker-elect Hall’s leadership team:
- Speaker Pro Tempore Rachelle Smit
- Associate Speaker Pro Tempore Jay DeBoyer
- Majority Floor Leader Bryan Posthumus
- Assistant Majority Floor Leader Brian BeGole
- Majority Whip Mike Harris
- Chief Deputy Whip Joe Aragona
- Caucus Chair Ken Borton
- Caucus Vice Chair Nancy Jenkins-Arno
“I’ve spearheaded successful tax cuts to help ease the rising cost of living for the people of Michigan, and I’ve conducted critical oversight of the administration to hold government agencies accountable and ensure Michiganders get value for their hard-earned tax dollars,” Hall said. “With our new majority, House Republicans will continue that track record. We’ll bring balance to state government, restore oversight efforts, make life more affordable, keep our communities safe, and deliver the value and services that taxpayers expect.”
Hall is a graduate of Western Michigan University’s Haworth School of Business and Cooley Law School.
Hall won the election against Democratic opponent Austin Marsman by a wide margin this election cycle.
While Republicans have retaken the House, the Michigan Senate and governorship is set to remain in Democratic control until the next election in 2026 when all Michigan senators and the governor will be up for grabs.
