Whitmer to reveal 2024 budget details, including free school lunch program

The administration is set to release more details Wednesday morning, and it could include a major boost to millions of families with kids in school.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is expected to release details Wednesday morning about her budget for 2024. Among the highlights is a proposal that could save families hundreds of dollars a year.

The administration is set to release those details Wednesday morning, and it could include a major boost to millions of families with kids in school.

According to MLive, under the governor's proposal, all Michigan children regardless of their socioeconomic status would get free breakfast and lunch at school.

Thanks to a federal program during the pandemic, all Michigan children got free lunch, but that program ended in July of last year.

Last month we learned that the state budget has a surplus of $5.1 billion in the general fund and $4.1 billion in the school aid fund.

Under Whitmer's proposal, $160 million from the school aid fund would go toward the free lunch program. 1.4 million children across the state would benefit from the move, and it could save families an average of $850 a year.

The recommendation is just one of many proposals we're expected to learn more about.

In her State of the State address, Whitmer also revealed plans to establish free preschool for all 4-year-olds in Michigan.
