GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Just over a week after his wife Gwen Walz visited West Michigan, Democratic nominee for vice president Tim Walz is making his first solo campaign stop in the area today.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is making a stop in Grand Rapids for a campaign rally at 7 p.m. on Thursday. His plane is expected to arrive at about 5:45 p.m. at Gerald R. Ford International Airport.

Walz is spending two days in Michigan, focusing on Kent and Ingham counties with his visits to Grand Rapids and East Lansing.

The campaign stop is part of the "New Way Forward" battleground tour, which will also include a stop by Walz in Wisconsin on Friday. Vice President Harris is also set to make stops in the battleground states of North Carolina and Pennsylvania this week.

“From Kent County to Ingham County, Governor Tim Walz will lay out the choice in this election — between Trump, who wants to raise taxes for working families by nearly $4,000, ban abortion nationwide, and threaten our Social Security and Medicare, and Vice President Harris who is paving a New Way Forward for families to not just get by, but get ahead. This election will be close, and we’ll keep working to highlight the contrast between the Vice President's record fighting for Michiganders and Donald Trump’s Project 2025 agenda to drag us into the past,” the Harris-Walz campaign said in a statement.

Former President Donald Trump and his vice presidential pick Ohio Senator JD Vance have also prioritized campaigning in Michigan with stops by both candidates in the state over the last month.

Team Trump Michigan Communications Director Victoria LaCivita released the following statement ahead of Gov. Walz's arrival Thursday:

"Tim Walz is a midwesterner who hates the midwest. His values are just as dangerously liberal as Kamala Harris', but he's not trying to hide them. Michiganders won't be fooled by his fake camo hat, donut eating dog and pony show. Tim Walz ignored the concerns of auto dealers, allowed Minneapolis to burn at the hands of violent rioters, and put tampons in boys' bathrooms. He's wrong for Michigan and wrong for America, which is why Michiganders are going to flip the Great Lakes State red in November."
