Michigan Gov. Whitmer endorses Vice President Kamala Harris for president; Co-chairs campaign

"Vice President Harris has my full support," Gov. Whitmer said Monday.

LANSING, Mich — Michigan's governor is joining the ranks of others in their endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for president.

Following heavy pressure from many in the Democratic party, President Joe Biden announced Sunday he won't seek re-election. Shortly after, he endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the post.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who has been a supporter of President Biden, announced Monday she's also ready to support Harris. She also announced she'll co-chair the Harris campaign.

"Today I am fired up to endorse Kamala Harris for President of the United States," Gov. Whitmer (D) said Monday. "In Vice President Harris, Michigan voters have a presidential candidate they can count on to focus on lowering their costs, restoring their freedoms, bringing jobs and supply chains back from overseas, and building an economy that works for working people. She's a former prosecutor, a champion for reproductive freedom, and I know that she's got Michigan's back."

Whitmer joined several other governors in the Midwest in their support for Harris, including Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), another name floated as a potential nominee, has thrown his support behind Harris.

"Tough. Fearless. Tenacious. With our democracy at stake and our future on the line, no one is better to prosecute the case against Donald Trump's dark vision and guide our country in a healthier direction than America's Vice President, Kamala Harris," Newsom shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, Sunday evening.

The Democratic National Convention, where delegates will officially nominate their party's candidate for president, is Aug. 19 through Aug. 22 in Chicago.

The Republican National Convention officially gave former President Donald Trump the nomination, emboldened by a failed assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania. Trump also recently announced his running mate, Senator JD Vance from Ohio.

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2024.
