Ottawa Co. commissioner speaks out against possible payout to health officer

Commissioner Jacob Bonnema called the settlement offer for Adeline Hambley an "abuse of the taxpayers."

OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich. — An Ottawa County commissioner spoke out against the possible payout to remove the county's top health official.

Commissioner Jacob Bonnema called the settlement offer for Adeline Hambley an "abuse of the taxpayers."

In a statement Thursday he said that the decision to payout "goes against every principle of good governance and fiscal conservatism."

He added, "We were given reasonable options, but they would not consider anything less than a guaranteed outcome."

A source familiar with the negotiations told 13 ON YOUR SIDE that Ottawa County is preparing to offer Hambley 4 million dollars in exchange for her resignation.

Hambley is accused of incompetence and misleading the public, related to statements she made during budget talks.

The settlement agreement is not a sure thing. County commissioners are expected to vote on that settlement next Tuesday at 9 am.
