Renovations at 'The Bridge' youth shelter are complete

For years, the organization has served homeless youth, or those who find themselves in unstable housing. And now their facilities have gotten an upgrade.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Just one episode of homelessness can force a young person to make a desperate choice. That's why Arbor Circle's "The Bridge" Youth Shelter exists, to stand in the gap when children ages 10-17 have no where else to turn.

13 On Your Side's Meredith TerHaar spoke with program director Julie Cnossen, who explained that the shelter can serve up to 15 youth at a time, 365 days a year. The Bridge is the only shelter of its kind, serving Kent, Ottawa, Montcalm and Ionia counties.

Renovations at the shelter were recently completed. Those changes were funded in part by community donations made at last year's spring dinner. They include a total revamp of the community space where those living there can meet with staff, work on homework, and use technology to stay connected with family.

The dining area, where staff eats dinner family-style every night, also got a complete makeover. The space is important for connection and consistency.

The bathrooms were another major project. Two several-stall bathrooms were converted to single use, gender neutral facilities. Julie explained the updated restrooms are better for safety and efficiency, since only one student was using the multi-stalled facilities at a time.

The bedrooms also got an update with fresh paint, bedding and decor. Each room has a theme and students can choose which one they'd like to stay in when they arrive.

It's not too late to play a role in the good work Arbor Circle is doing. Tickets are still available for the annual spring dinner on Wednesday, May 2. It's taking place at Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park. Click here for tickets.
