What is wrong with this deer? Those with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources are asking that question, after the deer was caught on camera behaving strangely.
"I think there's something wrong with this deer," Kara Rogers says over the cell phone video of a deer in Muskegon County.
The video, sent to WZZM 13 by Rogers, shows a deer with a staggered walk and mouth full of foam.
"It almost looks like it might have a head injury or something," Laura Link, said as she watched the video. Link lives in the area where the video was taken and finds it alarming.
"I'd be concerned that its something contagious, there's people that have livestock around here that it's going to harm, it's going to harm peoples pets," Link said. "If it dies in the woods and someone's dog finds it, that could be really bad."
Michigan DNR has heard the concerns and showed the video to a few of their experts.
"There is something definitely neurological going on with this deer, we're not 100% what that neurological condition is and we cannot speculate as to what is going on, but we will be monitoring the deer," Holly Vaughn, DNR Wildlife Communications Coordinator, said.
Vaughan says staff will go out to look for the deer and they'll also look for anymore reports of it, to figure out what is wrong.
"It's important to watch the health of wildlife in Michigan because we have had diseases like Chronic Wasting Disease and Bovine Tuberculosis pop up in a few areas in the state," she said. "It's always important when wildlife is behaving abnormally to report it to the DNR and then if deaths do occur, we can test those animals."
DNR would not speculate what exactly issue could be but they say it could be a number of things and it is something they are looking into.
