GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - An East Kentwood High School student has been charged in connection to the murder of his schoolmate.
Ahmed Hasan, 17, was formally charged Wednesday with open murder, armed robbery and conspiracy to commit armed robbery in the deadly shooting of 17-year-old James Irvin King. King was shot in the face on Sunday, Jan. 13 at the Towne & Country Shopping Center off Kalamazoo Avenue SE. King's cousin, who asked not to be identified, said he and King had gone to the shopping center to sell marijuana.
King's cousin, who witnessed the shooting, says King realized he was being robbed just as he was shot and pushed out of the suspect's vehicle. The suspects fled in a Dodge Magnum, which police later recovered off Norman Drive SE. Police said the vehicle belonged to Hasan, but he is not believed to be the gunman.
Hasan told police he and the other four suspects drove to the shopping center with the intention of stealing marijuana from King. Hasan also admitted to knowing one of the men in the car had a handgun.
The judge set Hasan's bond at $500,000. Hasan, an East Kentwood junior, told the judge he lived with his parents and sister on Breton Road SE.
