CUTLERVILLE, Mich. (WZZM) -- Covenant Christian Reformed Church has a unique ministry that gives away furniture to people in need.

Because of Sunday's tornado in Wyoming and Kentwood, the ministry is getting a lot of requests.

However, the tornado also destroyed the storage facility that housed all the furniture the church would normally give away, says the church's Bob Storteboom.

"My first thought was, 'Oh boy, this is probably the end of this,' because there was nothing left. We will be starting over with zero inventory. We usually have a couple hundred pieces in here available, so we will have to start collecting a lot more before we can be helping the greater Grand Rapids area."

The church needs mattresses, dressers, bed frames, couches, and sofas. A lot of mattresses recently donated by Calvin College were among furniture pieces destroyed in the storm.

Starting Monday, the ministry will rent a temporary trailer to collect furniture items at the church, located at 7171 Willard Ave SE, until a new storage facility can be found.

Storteboom says anyone who wants to donate can call him at 616-706-7854.

People who want to request furniture from the church can register at their local food pantry.
