FRUITPORT, Mich. - The AAA has awarded traffic safety grants for 25 years, giving nearly $1.5 million worth of traffic safety equipment.

The AAA will be awarding the Fruitport Police Department a Traffic Safety Grant worth $10,500 in the form of a giant check. The check will be awarded at 10 a.m. on Aug. 23 at the Fruitport Police Department.

The grant will fund the purchase of a speed alert message trailer that will be used to help promote safe driving, reduce speeding vehicles in the community and provide traffic study information.

The towable trailer is equipped with a 24 inch high programmable message board and radar unit. The trailer can be used to provide important safety information at emergency scenes, road and lane closure information and provide radar speed information for traffic enforcement.

The trailer is equipped with a speed radar and can display preprogrammed messages based on the speed of the target, volume of traffic or the time of day. The trailer is also capable of monitoring and storing speed data to assist with traffic studies in problem areas.

The 15 sworn police officers and 20 certified firefighters in Fruitport Township will receive training on the use of the trailer and will be able to deploy it when needed.
