Commuters traveling north of the City of Grand Rapids were halted on northbound U.S. 131 after a fatal, three vehicle crash. Two of the vehicles involved caught fire.
The freeway was closed until 4 p.m. Traffic was routed off the highway at West River Drive as part of the detour.
One person was killed in the crash and a second person was taken to an area hospital.
According to Michigan State Police a vehicle driven by a 56-year-old man from Stanton rear ended a vehicle driven by 64-year-old Kendell M. Martin of Grand Rapids.
Martin died on the scene. The third driver was not injured.
The crash remains under investigation.
