UPDATE: Authorities identified the victim in the crash as 59-year-old Ellen Eddleman.
GRAND HAVEN, Mich.- A Spring Lake woman was killed Thursday afternoon when her car collided with a semi-truck on U.S. 31 in front of the Meijer gas station at Comstock Street.
Police said the preliminary investigation shows that the 59-year-old driver of a 2004 Infinity SUV was attempting to make an eastbound turn onto Comstock from southbound U.S. 31 at about 3:15 p.m. Witness information and evidence from the scene indicated that the SUV had a blinking yellow (yield) turn signal when it traveled into the path of the semi, which was northbound and had the right of way (green traffic signal) at the intersection, said Sgt. Bob Ruster of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.
The SUV rolled over after the impact and the driver was ejected from the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene by the Ottawa County medical examiner.
Police said they were unsure if she was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.
The driver of the semi — John William Olson, 58, of Scottville — was not injured in the crash, police said. Olson was wearing a seat belt, according to Ruster.
Both northbound lanes of the highway from Comstock north to Robbins Road remained closed for about three and a half hours after the crash. Traffic was rerouted down Hayes Street. The highway’s northbound lanes were reopened at 6:52 p.m.
The crash remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Department. Assisting at the scene were officers from the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety, Grand Haven Township firefighters and the Michigan State Police Accident Reconstruction Team.
