Why school staff replaced student's stolen bike

When a 9-year-old student said his bicycle was stolen at gunpoint, the staff at Muskegon Montessori Academy for Environmental Change pitched in to buy him a replacement.

MUSKEGON, Mich. — They say everyone at the school is like a member of the family.

So, when a 9-year-old student's bicycle was stolen, the faculty at the Muskegon Montessori Academy for Environmental Change pitched in to buy him a new one.

Logan West says he encountered some older, bigger boys while was riding on a playground near his home. He says one showed a gun and took his bike. The staff at his school says they did the one thing they could to make it better.

“This is a family and if something happens to one of our family members we step in and try to help out in any way we can,” explains school principal Ali DuBois.  “That’s what we did in this situation.”

“Our hearts sank when we found out what happened to him and how traumatized he must have been and how scary that was,” says Logan’s teacher, Nicole Hutson. “That night we got him a bike and he had it the next day.”

“He goes to a great school,” says Josh West, Logan’s father. “They are showing him there are people out there that do good for other people.”

“I really like this bike,” says Logan. “It is really cool. Thank you, Montessori. Thank you for the bike.”

His family says the bike thief may have also recently robbed a nearby store. They say the descriptions are similar.
