GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan — Tuesday, April 23 is World Book Day, and an area non-profit celebrated by handing out books at three West Michigan schools.
Monday through Wednesday, the World Literacy Foundation and Amplify GR provided students at Hope Academy, River City Scholars and Dickinson Elementary up to 5 books each to take home.
"We feel strongly that through partnerships like this—at River City Scholars—that we can do and achieve better," said Jon Ippel, executive director at Amplify GR. "We feel that literacy in young children is a great predictor of how successful people are as they grow older. "
Amplify GR focuses on strengthening neighborhood schools, developing affordable housing and creating economic opportunities for residents.
The World Literacy Foundation is a non-profit that uses literacy to combat poverty. In February 2019, they launched Michigan Reads, which provides tutoring and resources to children from marginalized backgrounds.
