BELMONT, Mich. (WZZM) -- The West Michigan Miracle League opened play last September at Nate Hurwitz Field at the Art Van Sports Complex in Plainfield Township. Now it is about to go a step further giving special needs kids a chance to play their favorite games.
The Wolverine Worldwide Family YMCA in Belmont is "expanding the miracle."
"When we saw the incredible impact the Miracle League had, we thought, 'Why can't we do something year-round,'" says Randy Slikkers, executive director of the WWF YMCA. "When the baseball season is over, we have the ability here at the YMCA to look at other things besides baseball. Basketball, floor hockey, soccer, different opportunities. The same type of league play but we would be able to hold it year round."
The WWF YMCA will hold a three hour open house this Saturday for families of special needs kids. It will include Miracle League registration, a baseball clinic put on by Hope College players, and a parent focus group. The event will run from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm and is free. "At the same time the kids will be learning baseball skills, we'll have the parents together and we'll be learning what are the things we can help provide them."
