CMU's Keegan Batka cherishes college baseball ride

"I am more of a silent killer," Batka said. "I don't like to show much emotions. In my head, I like to be that guy that likes to go after dudes."

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Central Michigan pitcher Keegan Batka likes to stay in the moment on the mound.

"Usually like to keep it even keel," Batka said.

The Grand Rapids Christian High School alum's laid back mentality serves as an advantage for the Chippewas, and a disadvantage for opposing hitters in the batter's box.

"I am more of a silent killer," Batka said. "I don't like to show much emotions. In my head, I like to be that guy that likes to go after dudes."

Batka has certainly gotten after it during his year in Mount Pleasant. In his first year in the MAC, he finished fifth in the conference with a 3.67 ERA. And this year, he pitched a complete game shutout against Northern Illinois, which earned him MAC Pitcher of the Week honors.

"He's a special talent," Central Michigan head coach Jake Sabol said. "His stuff is electric sometimes. When he is on, he is on. He's a high punch out guy. He's a competitor. He had two really good years here in a Chippewa uniform."

However, Batka was not always wearing the maroon and gold. In fact, he played for both Wabash Valley and Kellogg Community College before landing in Mount Pleasant. He admits having four coaches in four years comes with its challenges, but he is grateful for his journey.

"Everyone has their own pathway, and I wouldn't change mine for the world," Batka said. "Both JUCOs I went to and now coming here definitely would not change that."

Keegan has seen the multiple school route firsthand before with his brother Austin, who pitched at two schools before landing at The University of Michigan. He is proud to follow in his big bro's footsteps.

"Definitely always a goal growing up, especially with my brother playing at Michigan," Batka said. "That was always a dream of mine, being like him. Hopefully surpassing him."

While the best Batka baseball player will inevitably become a common discussion at the family dinner table, right now, Keegan just wants to cherish his time as a college baseball player.

"Definitely a whirlwind of emotions," Batka said. "I love being out here with the guys, definitely. We have had our struggles this year but being able to finish out my career with these guys right here means the world to me."

Batka aims to continue his playing career. The 2024 MLB Draft begins on July 14.
