KENT, Ohio — Sophia Wiard gets buckets.
The Oakridge High School alum knows how to score the basketball better than anyone in the history of the Toledo women's basketball program.
On Wednesday night, the Rockets senior poured in 40 points against Kent State. She is the first player in Toledo women's basketball history to record two games scoring 40 points or more.
"I don't know I was feeling it," Wiard said. "It was adding up a bit quicker than I thought, I realized I am up. My teammates are horrible. They kept saying "keep shooting the ball." When I am at the free throw line, they kept telling me "one more, one more," making a little more pressure into it. I was just playing basketball. My teammates did a really good job to give me really good looks."
Wiard also set the single-game school record with 42 points scored in a game.
She also made history in another way on Wednesday night. Wiard has now played more minutes in a Toledo women's basketball uniform than anyone ever.
It is really no surprise to anyone who watched her hoop at Oakridge.
The 2019 graduate Sophia Wiard certainly left her mark on the Eagles.
During her time with the girls basketball team, she became both the boys and girls all-time leading scorer.
This season, the fifth-year player is averaging a career-best 16.5 points per game while shooting 45.5 percent from the field. Wiard also averages 4.5 rebounds and 5.1 assists per contest. She has started every single game she has played since the 2020-21 season.
