KALAMAZOO, Mich. — At this time last year, Western Michigan was in a quarterback battle with three signal callers: Jack Salopek, Treyson Bourguet and Mareyohn Hrabowski.
None of them ended up winning the job as Hayden Wolff is now QB1 after transferring in from Old Dominion.
Two of those three original quarterbacks left in the transfer portal, but one decided to stay.
That would be Hrabowski, but instead of wearing the red quarterback practice jersey this year, he's now playing tight end.
"Mareyohn came to me early last year," Western Michigan head coach Lance Taylor said. "He just said, 'Coach, I want to play. I want to help the team in some form or fashion.' We felt like in order to use some of his traits and athletic ability, it was going to benefit him to be able to move a position."
Hrabowski only recorded two carries for five yards in 2023 after getting more reps in 2022. The redshirt junior says he has had to learn new footwork and get used to the new guys in the new room but is loving the change.
"I feel like that would put me in the best position to see the field," Hrabowski said. "The group of guys I have behind me, they all encourage me and motivate me to attack my goals."
Hrabowski says this is the best spring he has been a part of yet.
"It's definitely a lot different," Hrabowski said. "I enjoy initiating contact. I always look at myself being a physical guy especially with my frame. I feel like I can use that as an advantage is the best thing for me."
Western Michigan holds practice No. 12 of the spring on Saturday.
