Grand Rapids Rise opening night brings professional women's volleyball to GR

Director of Strategic Investments Cole DeVos said it's a historic moment both for Grand Rapids and professional volleyball to welcome the Rise.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Grand Rapids Rise, the city's first major-league women’s sports team, is preparing for its debut game at Van Andel Arena.

Established in December 2022, the Rise is bringing professional women's volleyball to Grand Rapids for the first time Thursday night.

The Rise began their training at the start of December, and head coach Cathy George quickly said she was excited with the team's starting point in the leadup to the season kickoff.

Cole DeVos, director of strategic investments, said the game is going

"We have a fun energetic group, led by our head coach Kathy George, who is a ball of energy herself," he said. "She's fun, and really has this team ready to go. We're looking forward to a high-energy match at the highest level tonight."

DeVos said it's a historic moment both for Grand Rapids and professional volleyball to welcome the Rise.

"We're a sports town in Grand Rapids. But this is the first time we get a taste of what volleyball is. And I think these athletes are playing at the highest level. This is the top level here in the United States," DeVos said. "So being able to witness that here in our hometown of Grand Rapids—and these ladies are fantastic athletes—so being able to witness that here in our hometown is truly special."

He said if you haven't had a chance to watch a pro volleyball match in person, this is a great time to make your way to a game.
