GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — There are two Michigan Mr. Basketball Candidates out of West Michigan, one of them being Grand Rapids Catholic Central High School star Durral "Phat Phat" Brooks.
The senior Cougar is on the cusp of history.
The future Michigan Wolverine is just 19 points away from tying the school's scoring record, and 20 points away from breaking it.
The scoring mark has stood for just one year as Brooks' teammate Kaden Brown broke Javon Turley's record last January.
Even though "Phat Phat" is so close to history, that's not what he cares about.
"I haven't really been focused on myself," Brooks said. "Even the whole Mr. Basketball thing, I couldn't honestly care less if I win it or not. I am just focused on trying to get back to the Breslin and having my team get a state championship."
The ride to the scoring record this season is all the more impressive because Brooks has not been completely healthy this season.
"It's a blessing to coach Phat," Grand Rapids Catholic Central head coach TJ Meerman said. "He's a great kid on and off the floor. In the locker room, he is the first kid to say, 'My bad. I could have done this better,' which is great for our younger guys to see. Phat is playing with a partially torn patella tendon right now and that has not been broadcasted around the state, but he has been on a minutes restriction and he hasn't played in a few games his senior year. He is just battling. He is having an incredible year for us and it's because of the time he puts in."
Brooks will go for history and a district title on Friday against Wyoming Lee. Tip is at 7 p.m. at West Catholic High School.
