GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — We are a month into the high school boys basketball season and perhaps the most impressive team so far in town has been Grand Rapids Christian.
The Eagles are soaring to a 5-0 start.
It's the first time Grand Rapids Christian has been undefeated through five games since the shortened 2020-21 season.
The Eagles have not played any cupcakes either. All of the wins have been against tough opponents in South Christian, Wyoming, Hudsonville, Byron Center and Grand Rapids Catholic Central.
Much of this success is due in large part that anyone can dominate on any given night. The Eagles have six-foot nine-inch big man Jaylan Ouwinga who has committed to Toledo, but the senior knows he isn't the only one who can have a big game.
"It's important because teams can't focus in on one player," Ouwinga said. "If they focus in on me, I've got teammates that can shoot or get others buckets. If they focus one them, I can score."
Grand Rapids Christian plays unselfish basketball. The Eagles have nine seniors on the roster who have been there and done that, and it's leading to impressive play.
"The biggest thing is our experience," Grand Rapids Christian head coach Eric Taylor said. "Our experience and versatility and our size. We've got multiple guys who can score the ball. I think our guys have great chemistry and camaraderie. They don't play with each other, they play for each other. If we can continue to do that, continue to rebound and be a great defensive team, we've got a chance to make a heck of a run."
The Eagles have 10 days off before their next game. Grand Rapids Christian will play Detroit Western on December 29.
