Cedar Springs hoping history repeats itself

The Red Hawks won double-digit games for the second time in program history last year, and the team is hoping to repeat that success.

CEDAR SPRINGS, Mich. - The Cedar Springs Red Hawks had a 2018 season to remember. Finishing 10-2, the Red Hawks made it all the way to the regional finals where they were upended by Muskegon, 34-18.

However, they didn't lose against an OK White opponent last year and posted three consecutive shutouts while scoring more than 40 points in each game against Lowell, Ottawa Hills and Forest Hills Northern.

Although head coach Gus Kapolka says his team might not be as explosive offensively, he expects the offensive line to be strong to start the season.

"We have to fill some guys in the backfield, but we're a little more solidified up front this year than we were last year," Kapolka said. "We're looking for the offensive line maybe to carry us a bit early, whereas last year it was more the guys on the back end."

The Red Hawks won double-digit games for the second time in program history in 2018 and won a district title for the first time since 2000.

The Red Hawks open the season on Aug. 30 against Saginaw Swan Valley, who topped the Red Hawks in last year's season opener, 21-12.
