Members of the Grand Rapids Catholic Central football team prepare for the national anthem before their opening week game on Friday, August 30, 2024.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — One of the things we love about putting together 13 On Your Sidelines each week is going back into the record books and seeing which teams are making history for their schools. For example Holland Christian is 4-0 for the first time since 2009, Newaygo is 4-0 for the first time since 1997, and Northview is 4-0 for the first time since 1992.

But now it's time to see whose individual performance will help them go down in history as a 13 On Your Sidelines MVP of the Week. Here are the nominees from week four.

Brody Betser, Caledonia quarterback

After losing their first game of the season to East Kentwood in week three, Caledonia is back on track with a 36-28 road win against Grand Haven. Part of the credit for their success goes to senior Brody Betser, who had five total touchdowns for the Scots. Three of those touchdowns came through the air, and the other two were rushing touchdowns.

James Young, Muskegon quarterback

After transferring from neighboring North Muskegon, one of the newest members of the Muskegon Big Reds is making his mark at his new stomping grounds. Young completed 8 of his 11 passes for 118 yards on Friday against Forest Hills Northern. The senior also ran the ball 10 times for 86 yards as the Big Reds beat the Huskies 47-28.

Owen Haarsma, Hudsonville runningback

Prior to this past Friday, Rockford hadn't lost a regular season game since 2019. Hudsonville changed that with a 28-21 win over the Rams, and the performance of Owen Haarsma was a big reason for that. The junior led the Hudsonville ground game with 127 yards rushing on 10 carries. He also added two touchdowns to help the Eagles soar.
