MUSKEGON, Mich. — If there is one thing that is clear, it's that Muskegon loves Big Reds football.
That was certainly clear Sunday afternoon in the Port City.
There was a big time celebration in Muskegon on Sunday to recognize the Division 2 high school football state champion Big Reds. Hundreds packed the basketball gym at the high school to see the champions.
Every player and coach got their kudos in front of the packed crowd. A few even had the chance to speak to the community that means so much to them.
"Muskegon football players are definitely thankful for the fans and the people that show love to us and encourage us to be who we are," Muskegon senior quarterback M'Khi Guy said.
Head coach Shane Fairfield said in his speech that Muskegon High School is the heart beat of the city. He is so proud the Big Reds can represent and bring joy to the town.
"Man, this is like winning the game all over again," Fairfield said. "It was like them handing me the trophy on Saturday night."
The Big Reds were thankful for the community for showing out.
"Ah man, this is unbelievable," Muskegon High School Athletic Director Keith Guy said. "It is always great to get the community together because they put together a lot of heart, sweat and tears into this as well. We are just happy to be able to celebrate together and enjoy this moment."
The Big Reds certainly hope they can celebrate another state championship with their community in 2024.
