GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The newest Meijer Scholar Athlete of the week is not just a leader on her basketball team, but one of the smartest kids in school.
Northpointe Christian High School student Hayleigh Amey is the definition of a student-athlete.
She has been on the varsity basketball and soccer teams for all four years of high school and has even set a few Mustangs basketball records. Amey has been a captain on the basketball team for the past two years.
On top of that, the senior is a leader on the leadership team. She is also in the National Honor Society with a 4.3 GPA and will be the salutatorian of her class.
Amey says she would not have excelled without her support system.
"To be a good student-athlete is to put as much effort on the court as you do in school," Amey said. "You are a student-athlete you have to do both. You can't just do one and ignore the other. You have to do both really well. For me, that means leaning on my teammates and encouragement from my coaches and team and my classmates and my best friends. I would say focus on both school and sports. Put them together. Love both of them. Have a good time doing both but also lean on your family and your teammates and your friends because at the end of the day, win or lose, good grade or bad grade, that's what is going to get you through."
Amey will play college basketball at Indiana Wesleyan. She plans on becoming a physician's assistant someday.
