Two South Christian Sailors sign with Grand Valley State football

Sailors wide receiver Jake Vermaas and defensive lineman Camren VanSolkema signed with Grand Valley State football on Tuesday morning.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — National Signing Day might have been last week, but two South Christian seniors decided to celebrate the occasion on Tuesday.

Sailors wide receiver Jake Vermaas and defensive lineman Camren VanSolkema signed with Grand Valley State football on Tuesday morning.

Both South Christian stars played an integral role in getting the Sailors back to the state championship game for the second year in a row.

The talented duo is certainly glad to continue playing at a high level close to home, but they are even more excited about the people they will be playing with and for at Grand Valley State the most.

"It's very exciting," Vermaas said. "I think that has been one of my goals since I was very young just to accomplish that and to do that at Grand Valley is unbelievable. Knowing Grand Valley football as I was growing up and to just take that next step and play at the next level is super exciting so I am very excited."

The two Sailors fulfilled lifelong goals of becoming college football players.

"It was a big dream of mine my whole life," VanSolkema said. "As a kid, I didn't really love football but as I started getting bigger, I absolutely fell in love with it. I knew I wanted to play at the next level."

Vermaas and VanSolkema will be roommates next year in Allendale. They are just two of seven West Michigan natives to sign to play college football under Scott Wooster in GVSU's 2024 recruiting class.
